An expansion of the original English Teaching Office, the Foreign Languages Department of Henan College of Finance and Economics got its present name in early 1996 and began to admit students of English major for three-year diploma education in the year 2000. Two years later, the first undergraduates for degree study were admitted. The department sets its target at bringing up comprehensive talents qualified in English, management and trade for Henan’s economic development. Presently, we are taking the task of English teaching for a total of 6 000 undergraduates of non-English major, 500 of English major, and 50 graduate-students of non-English major.

　The Foreign Languages Department has a qualified faculty of 45 teachers and 9 administrative staff workers, of which there is one professor, 16 associate professors and 23 lecturers. 15 of all the teachers have got a Master’s Degree of Art for the English Language. Having established extensive relations with foreign universities, the department has quite a number of its teachers go abroad for a degree study or as visiting scholars at prestigious universities in the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia. Many of our teachers have also got the honor of being invited to attend or do presentations at some international academic conferences. Thanks to their contribution and hard work, the department assisted Zhengzhou Municipality in its successful efforts to host the 12th and 13th Annual Conference for the World’s Medium and Small Cities Network & the International Trade Conference. Besides, the department has constantly invited foreign teachers to work and do scientific research here, thus further enhancing our teaching ability. With joint efforts of all the staff, our College English Teaching course is assessed provincial excellence. Meanwhile, we have also set up English courses specially related to finance and management, such as Intensive English of Finance and Economics, Conversational Business English, Business English Telex and Letters, Selective Reading of English Newspapers and Periodicals, General Survey of the US and UK, Western Cultures, and Organizational Behavior, accumulating rich experience in the field. Honors and awards won by the staff go as follows: one teacher earned the National Excellent Teacher’s Title, another won the first award for the 1996 Socialistic Working Skill Contest organized by Zhengzhou Municipality, three other teachers got a second award and two excellence awards for the same event in 2000, organized by Henan Education Union in cooperation with Henan Personnel Bureau. In recently years, our teaching staff have participated or organized over 10 ministry or provincial leveled research projects, published 15 books and over 40 theses, 5 of which have received provincial or higher awards, exercising certain effect on the academic arena both in or out of Henan. Our students, too, have won numerous honors with hard work, including a first award at the National English Contest, a second award at the First National English Composition Contest, a first award for non-English major at Henan English Speech Contest, and a second award for English major at the same
event.

　The Department has sophisticated multi-media language studios and audio rooms at service of the students with great storage of video/ audio information, reference books and periodicals.

　We set our focus on training the students’ primary English application abilities as well as the capacity to work at computers. In this way, we hope to bring up comprehensive talents who are qualified for foreign trade, joint or sole venture business, management, as well as research work with their well-trained English abilities.
